Description
The De Havilland DH.88 Comet is a British low-wing sports racing aircraft of the interwar period. The drive was provided by two de Havilland Gipsy-Six engines of 230 horsepower each. The flight of the prototype took place in 1934. In total, only 5 copies of this aircraft were made together with experimental samples. The de Havilland DH.88 Comet was specially designed to compete in the MacRobertson Air Race, an intercontinental air race from Great Britain to Australia in 1934. Despite a relatively short period of research and development, a very interesting and successful machine was created, which was characterized by an excellent aerodynamic profile, a closed cockpit, a retractable landing gear (which was not standard in sports aircraft at the time!), and a long maximum flight range of up to 4800 kilometers! In 1934-1938, this type of aircraft broke several international aviation records. To date, two DH.88 comets have survived.
