The Polikarpov I-16 was a Soviet single-engine, low-wing fighter of mixed design.
It first flew in 1933. It was one of the most advanced fighters of its time, thanks to its retractable landing gear and variable pitch propeller. However, due to its short fuselage, it was difficult to pilot.
The I-16 saw its first combat service in the Spanish Civil War (500 units were built), where it impressed with its maneuverability, firepower, and speed. It was also used in China against Japan in 1939.
Initially powered by the M-22 engine, later the M-25 or M-63. It remained on the Eastern Front until 1942, operating as a fighter and attack aircraft.
