Description

The de Havilland DH.88 "Comet" is a British twin-engined sports and racing low-wing aircraft of the interwar period.

The driving force was two de Havilland Gipsy-Six engines with a capacity of 230 hp each. The prototype made its first flight in 1934. In total, together with the prototypes, only 5 copies of this aircraft were manufactured.

The de Havilland DH.88 "Comet" was specially designed to participate in the 1934 intercontinental air race from Great Britain to Australia, known as the MacRobertson Air Race. Despite the relatively short period of research and development, a very interesting and successful aircraft was created, which was distinguished by an excellent aerodynamic profile, an enclosed cockpit, retractable landing gear (which was not standard for sports aircraft at that time!), as well as a significant maximum flight range - up to 4,800 kilometers!
